The very lovely and talented Dawn from She is Too Fond of Books is joining us today to give you a literary road trip around NYC. This woman speaks from experience as she’s visited many an indie bookstore and even did a tour of some of these gems last year during BEA.

**********

You’re heading to New York City for Book Blogger Con and/or Book Expo America. You’ll be surrounded by books and bookish people all day – stacks of books at Buzz sessions, author autographing opportunities, publicists and other bloggers who want to talk to you about hot titles for fall.

So, how will you spend your limited down time, those few hours without scheduled sessions, or an evening out on the town?

I imagine you might want to visit some of the bookstores in the five boroughs of New York. If you need to justify a bookshop excursion, just tell yourself (or your spouse, or your less-than-enthusiastic roommate) that you’re conducting research for a future blog post.

But, where to start? There are dozens (hundreds?) of bookstores in New York – how can you maximize your book shopping experience?

As with any successful mission, there are two phases: plan and attack.

Preparation for bookstore touring is a list of advice much like Mom would give: wear comfortable shoes, carry a map or smartPhone with mapping/GPS capabilities, purchase a Metro card so you’re not fumbling with your money on the subway, bring your wishlist or – my favorite way to discover books – shop from the store’s staff picks.

I’ll add, bring a tote bag. Rather than juggling a lot of smaller bags from the shops you visit, anticipate the need for a comfortable carry-all. Better yet, purchase one at the first bookstore you visit; most shops have logo totes, which are fantastic souvenirs and conversation pieces. In fact, The Strand is known for its extensive gallery of fun and funky totes.

Now that you’re equipped to invade a small country, it’s time to plot the logistics.

You might consider the events listed as part of BEA’s New York Book Week. There are author readings, signings, open mic nights, poetry readings, and launch parties. New events are being added daily; I’ve already decided that I’ll need to clone myself in order to hit a fraction of the things that interest me!

Check out the IndieBound website for a list of bookstores near your hotel, the restaurant where you’re eating dinner, or a museum you’re visiting. You need only specify “bookstore,” and the street address (or at least the zip code). Limit the search to the minimum number of miles (10) and results (10) to really pinpoint the listings that are returned.

Make use of the Spotlight on NYC Bookstores website, which indexes shops by borough, and gives general information, directions, social media links, and perhaps a link to a “Spotlight on Bookstores” post, which is a personal essay from someone who has visited the bookshop. The Spotlight on NYC Bookstores site is what we call “an evolving work;” if you visit a store that’s missing from the index, or feel inspired to write a Spotlight post about your NYC bookstore experience, please let me know!

Finally, don’t forget your social media contacts – there are real people behind those twitter handles and bookshop blogs that you follow. As much fun as it is to meet your blogging friends face-to-face, it’s as rewarding to meet the “voice” of various bookstore. Seek out a store with whom you have a great twitter rapport, and make an “in real life” connection.

New York has wonderful general interest bookstores, as well as specialty stores – children’s books, travel, history, drama, women’s studies, cooking, world literature, art, African American studies, mysteries, and more! It’s all out there waiting for you … Bookworms, take a bite of the Big Apple!

Want to take the opportunity to have some face time with bloggers? Want to answer their questions and share with them all your thoughts and opinions on all things authory?

Here’s your chance!

The organizers of the Book Blogger Convention have added one more session to our already awesome schedule for 2011′s convention. Author Speed Dating.

This won’t be your traditional session where a limited number of panelists will be sitting in front of a room full of people and speaking on a particular subject. All discussion and Q/A will happen as you travel from table full of bloggers to table full of bloggers over a period of time.

You’ll be workin’ the room!

We’re still working out some of the logistics but by registering via this form you will see some of the initial information and requirements.

Any questions you may have can be directed to our Book Blogger Convention email at bookbloggercon@gmail.com.

A list of participating authors can be found on our agenda.

Come join us! We’d love to have you!

**** April 12, 2011 – Please note we welcome additional authors participation but at this time we have reached the limit to those we are able to provide free registration. If you would like to participate we encourage you to fill out this form to indicate your interest then proceed through normal BBC/BEA registration channels.

– May 9, 2011 — Thank you to all panelists who have registered to participate. We are no longer taking on authors for participation.

It’s time! It’s time!

Registration for the Book Blogger Convention is now open!

*squeals in delight*

This year we couldn’t be happier to be more fully folded under Book Expo America‘s umbrella. We’re quite excited to be able to streamline the registration process by allowing Book Blogger Convention participants to register for our awesome event through the BEA website here.

Please note, our pricing structure remains the same as last year. If you register for BBC your pass to BEA is included. The only additional fees to the BBC registration price you will encounter would be additional events you may want to participate in (ie: author meals, educational sessions). This pricing structure is available to all regardless of your professional affiliation — so if you’re a blogger, a librarian, or other publishing industry professional you’ll be able to designate that on your badge and still only pay the BBC registration fee for access to both.

So here’s how registration works:

Navigate to the Book Expo America Registration Site

Enter your personal information

Create a password (if you have already done so previously)

Click the “continue” button

Select your “badge category” (the blogger designation is under non-editorial media)

Click the “continue” button

Select further badge designation and any additional membership affiliation if applicable

Click the “continue” button

Select an option from the “Exhibits and Conference Pass” section

Select the “Book Bloggers” option from the concurrent events page (making this selection will automatically zero out the cost from your previous exhibit/conference pass selection so that it is free of charge)

Click the “continue” button

Proceed through the remainder of the screens as required to complete your registration

An option to register for BBC will also be made available as part of the press registration. Having said that, we strongly encourage all participants to register through the main registration since it will not require additional vetting on the part of BEA’s press office. All BBC participants will automatically be provided a BEA badge at no additional charge. Further, registering through the main registration page will limit confusion when participants go to pick up their badge on site.

As some of you may be aware, BEA made registration available for a small window of time last week while they were testing the application format. It was not intended to go public and we have been asked to encourage BBC participants to go through the registration process again so you are able to appropriately specify your participation. If you are one of the few who registered during that time please go through the process above and contact us at bookbloggercon@gmail.com to let us know so we can work with BEA to cancel the original erroneous registration.

If you have any questions please feel free to email us at the link above. We’re looking forward to seeing you in May!
